In my opinion, our childhood sets us up for the rest of our lives--whether it be good or bad. A good childhood affects us positively and a bad one affects us negatively. Fortunately, I had a very good childhood; I grew up with loving parents, caring friends, and a house I could call my home. I grew up to have class, respect, and self-discipline. My parents taught myself and my siblings very important life lessons and rules to live by. I'm very grateful for the childhood that I had, and that's why I would like to share these five songs with you--the songs that remind me of my childhood.
Once When I Was Little - James Morrison
"I was the one who would always jump in first,
I didn't think twice to look behind.
Got such a good feeling just from playing in the dirt,
Once when I was little"
I was the little girl that loved playing the dirt. My mother would have to check my pockets every time I came inside from playing because I was notorious for shoving rocks and dirt into them. I was a mud slinger by day and a dressed up doll by night. I loved being dirty, and I was always the one that lead my friends to the creek.
"So here comes the next one, next in line.
Stay as young you can, for the longest time
'Cause those days flew by
Like a breeze just passing through.
Once when I was little"
I love the line "stay as young as you can". I think that one's childhood sticks with them forever and overall makes them the person that they are and become.
But unfortunately, those days do fly by.
Cowgirls Don't Cry - Brooks and Dunn
"Lessons in life are going to show you in time,
Soon enough you're gonna know why.
It's gonna hurt every now and then.
If you fall, get back on again"
My father and grandfather always taught me to keep trying after I would mess up doing something. They taught me to never give up in what I was trying to accomplish--and more importantly: to never give up on myself.
"Cowgirls don't cry"
As my grandfather would always say "crying is a sign of weakness. Never let them know you're down." That's something I'll carry with me forever. Although I think it's important to cry sometimes, I hate letting people know I'm sad or down on myself.
Rain is a Good Thing - Luke Bryan
"It clouds up in the city, the weather man complains,
But where I come from, rain is a good thing"
I can relate to this quote pretty literally. Everyone in town would contribute to the whole community; there were those that did the hunting and sold the meat, those that sold clothes, those that had other shops, and then there were those that grew and sold their crops. The rain was very much so a blessing straight from God. Of course, in this case, there can be too much of a good thing at times.
That's What I Call Home - Blake Shelton
"There's a house that's a little run down.
This city ain't never found.
It's miles and miles from a paved road,
That's where we grew up."
This city ain't never found.
It's miles and miles from a paved road,
That's where we grew up."
Coming from a super small town in souther Mississippi, we were very isolated; no one besides the residents of Mississippi really know where Wade was located. That's one thing I loved though, and that's where I grew up.
"Daddy don't know a stranger;
A handshake and he's your friend"
A handshake and he's your friend"
Since Wade was a really small town, everyone knew everyone. We were a very close-knit community. When someone knew would come to our town, we would welcome them with open arms and they would become a part of the "family".
"Just a place made of nails and wood,
But it's the love that makes you feel so good.
That's what I call,
That's what I call home."
But it's the love that makes you feel so good.
That's what I call,
That's what I call home."
Honestly, and I'm not trying to brag when I say this, but my family had a really really nice house and a lot of land. However, a lot of the houses in the town were very run-down--not from lack of care, but because they were passed down from generation-to-generation. That's what they called home though; it didn't matter if the house was super nice and brand new; it was still a home.
Mississippi - Pussycat
First of all, I know this song is weird.. But it fits really well in my theme. Don't judge me..
"Love and understanding,
Everywhere around."
Where I'm from, these were two of the most important qualities. We've strived to be a town of love, understanding, and acceptance. It was in every home and every shop. You could find love and understanding everywhere around.
"Mississippi, I'll remember you
Whenever I should go away.
I'll be longing for the day
That I will be returning again.
Mississippi, you'll be on my mind,
Every time I hear this song.
Mississippi roll along,
Until the end of time."
Mississippi will always be in the back of my mind. No matter what, it will always be first home; it will always be the place where I gained some wisdom, respect, discipline, and understanding. I could never forget all the memories that encompass my thoughts of Mississippi.
I will never want or let my memories of Mississippi or my childhood perish.
I really enjoyed readin your post Deanna! When you started off with talking about how you were the little girl that loved to play in the dirt and go to the creek, I was nodding my head along with you! That was me, too. I didn't own a doll ever in my life. Those days did go by, and you lived in a different kind of place than most of us did growing up. I really liked hearing how your childhood was, since I've lived in the suburbs all my life. :)
ReplyDeleteJessica, I can also agree to some of the things you said about Deanna's blog. First off, When you said, "Those days go by fast" they defintely do. It just seems like the other day that I was still in middle or elementary school. I feel that many memories were made then and still many more are to come. Another thing I really agreed with was when you said, "I've lived in the suburbs all my life." Well I haven't lived in the suburbs all my life, but for most of my life I have. I feel that what we can all take out of this is try to live life to the fullest and never take anything for granted because as we all can see time defintely fly's.
